Lily

Cut Flower Care Guide

True lilies (Lilium) produce spectacular, fragrant blooms on tall stems and are a staple of the cut flower market. Asiatics bloom first (June–July) with upward-facing flowers, followed by Oriental types (July–August) with their intoxicating fragrance. LA and OT hybrids combine the best traits for cut flower production.

🌱 Planting Guide

When to Plant Fall (October–November) or early spring as soon as soil is workable. Fall planting is preferred.
Planting Depth 6–8 inches deep (3 times the bulb height). Deeper in sandy soil.
Spacing 12–18 inches between bulbs; 24–36 inches between rows
Soil Well-drained, slightly acidic soil, pH 6.0–6.5. Amend with compost. Good drainage is essential.
Sunlight Full sun with roots in shade — mulch around base or plant low groundcover at feet

💡 Tips

  • Never let lily bulbs dry out — plant immediately upon receipt
  • Bulbs should be firm and plump; reject any that are soft or moldy
  • Stake tall varieties or use netting to prevent storm damage
  • Asiatics for early color, Orientals for fragrance, OT hybrids for both
  • Plant in groups of 5–7 of the same variety for visual impact and efficient harvesting
