Cut Flower Care Guide
True lilies (Lilium) produce spectacular, fragrant blooms on tall stems and are a staple of the cut flower market. Asiatics bloom first (June–July) with upward-facing flowers, followed by Oriental types (July–August) with their intoxicating fragrance. LA and OT hybrids combine the best traits for cut flower production.
Order bulbs from specialty suppliers. Plan planting layout.
Finalize orders. Prepare beds. Check mulch on established plantings.
Remove winter mulch gradually. Watch for emerging shoots. Apply spring fertilizer.
Shoots growing actively. Install stakes or netting. Scout for red lily beetle.
Plants growing rapidly. Keep up with beetle patrol. Water and feed.
Asiatic lilies begin blooming. Harvest when first bud shows color.
LA hybrids and early Orientals blooming. Peak harvest. Remove lily beetle.
Late Orientals and OT hybrids blooming. Continue harvesting.
Bloom season ending. Allow foliage to yellow naturally. Plant new bulbs.
Plant new bulbs. Cut yellowed foliage. Apply mulch.
Finish planting. Ensure winter mulch is in place (zone 5).
Beds dormant. Plan next season. Order bulbs for spring delivery if needed.
