Peony

Cut Flower Care Guide

Peonies are a high-value perennial cut flower that can produce for 50+ years from a single planting. The lush, fragrant blooms command top dollar at market but require patience β€” newly planted roots take 2–3 years to reach full production. The relatively short bloom season (3–4 weeks) makes them precious and highly sought after.

🌱 Planting Guide

When to Plant Fall (September–October) is ideal for bare-root planting. Container plants can go in spring.
Planting Depth Eyes (buds) must be exactly 1–2 inches below soil level β€” this is critical. Too deep and they won't bloom.
Spacing 36–48 inches between plants; 4–5 feet between rows
Soil Rich, well-drained soil, pH 6.5–7.0. Amend with compost and bone meal. Peonies don't like wet feet.
Sunlight Full sun β€” minimum 6 hours. Some afternoon shade is fine in warmer zone 7 locations.

πŸ’‘ Tips

  • Planting depth is the #1 reason peonies fail to bloom β€” eyes must be 1–2 inches below soil level
  • Don't expect much production in years 1–2; plants establish slowly
  • Peony grids or stakes are essential β€” heavy blooms flop without support
  • Coral Charm, Sarah Bernhardt, and Karl Rosenfield are excellent cut flower varieties
  • Peonies don't like being moved β€” choose the site carefully
